MEET THE FOUNDER
Shyah discovered a passion for filmmaking in 2010.
He understood how impactful a video can be; a single piece can evoke anger, joy, fear and excitement - there’s no medium like video. Shyah set out to positively impact his community via filmmaking and pursued an education in Film Studies and Digital Video Production in his home province of Ontario. In 2014, Shyah moved to British Columbia to begin his career in video production.
Since then, Shyah has filmed over 200 weddings and has helped businesses, private schools and municipalities with their video marketing content. He’s been recognized as one of the best videographers in Burnaby.
When the pandemic continued into 2021, a lot of his clients postponed their wedding or projects. Shyah took advantage of that time to begin working on that dream of his: a conference that would build a community of filmmakers and create a network of support and camaraderie.

The Origin Story
Years ago, Shyah had a conversation with a photographer. Agitated, she lamented about an uncooperative videographer who was impeding her ability to provide her clients with an enjoyable experience. Disappointed in the reputation that videographers had with this photographer, Shyah decided that he wanted to foster a generation of videographers/filmmakers who were collaborative and not competitive; empathetic and not selfish. Northbound is founded on this vision - Canada’s first filmmaker conference that aims to educate and inspire entrepreneurs, and wedding and commercial videographers.
